Biography
Dr. Stefan Holubar is a Professor of Surgery and colorectal surgeon specializing in IBD surgery and surgical outcomes research. He received his MD from the University of Vermont in 2002, completed General Surgery training at North Shore–LIJ, earned a Master of Science in Clinical and Translational Research, and completed Colorectal Surgery fellowship at Mayo Clinic Rochester (2007–2010). He served as Chief of Colon and Rectal Surgery at Dartmouth-Hitchcock before joining a major academic medical center in 2017, where he leads IBD Surgery and research programs as Director of Research, Department of Colorectal Surgery, Cleveland Clinic.
Nationally, Dr. Holubar co-leads the ACS NSQIP IBD Collaborative and chaired the ASCRS IBD Committee (2023–2025). He is PI of the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation's longitudinal surgical cohort, IBD-SIRCQ. With over 300 peer-reviewed publications and 225+ focused on IBD, he is among the most productive surgical IBD researchers in North America.
His focus is surgery for IBD and artificial intelligence, with special interest in redo IPAA and perianal Crohn's. Recent contributions include Twisted Pouch Syndrome, the Pouch Tortuosity Index, Mesenteric Excision and Exclusion, and 3D Pouchography. He has developed clinical AI platforms including IBDology.org, Pouchy.org, Pouchology.org, and founded the iPouch Consortium.
